Picture Groups & Umbrella Topics Explained

Picture groups are the twist that sets Word Connect Association apart from other category puzzles. They add a second layer to the board: a small topic that, once solved, becomes a single tile inside a bigger topic.

What is a picture group?

A picture group has three parts:

• The picture topic: four normal word tiles, for example four US states.
• The picture tile: when you solve that row, the four words collapse into a single picture, in this case the flag of the USA.
• The umbrella topic: a bigger category that the picture belongs to, here Countries. The picture counts as one of its four words.

That means the umbrella row can't be finished until you solve the picture group first. It's a nested category, and it's why some boards seem to be "missing" a tile.

Example: level 2

FLORIDA · TEXAS · ARIZONA · ALASKA→🖼️ USA→COUNTRIES

Solve US States (Florida, Texas, Arizona, Alaska) and the row becomes a picture of USA. Drop that picture in with Canada, Brazil, China to finish Countries.See the level 2 answers.

Levels with two pictures

117 levels have two picture groups at once. Level 34 is the first:

• Panda Features → picture of Panda → goes in Wild Animals
• Island Features → picture of Island → goes in Landforms

How to solve picture levels

1. Look for "features" topics. Most picture topics are things like Owl Features or Tent Features: words that describe one object.
2. Find the umbrella row with only three words. If you can see three countries but no fourth, a flag picture is probably coming.
3. Solve the picture group first. It frees up the umbrella row and removes four tiles from the board.
4. Don't put the concept word in by hand. The concept (like TURTLE) arrives as a picture, so a text tile that looks like it is probably part of another topic.
